Track your Speed Post article/consignment with ease
Tracking or Consignment Number
At the time of booking your article through Speed Post for domestic and international destinations, the booking clerk at the Post Office gives you a receipt.
A unique ID Number consisting of 13 alphanumeric characters is printed at the top of the receipt. This is the tracking number or the article consignment number that you will require later for tracing and tracking your article.
The receipt also gives other details such as the weight of the article, the tariff amount, date and time of booking, counter number and OP code. But it is the 13 digit number that is the most important part of the Trace and Track System put in place by India Post.
Without the ID number, you will find it very difficult to track your article. So, save the receipt till the very end.
SMS based Delivery Status
At the time of booking your consignment, you can provide your mobile number. A free SMS message from the Department of Posts will update you when your article is delivered.
If you like, you can even track your consignment and find its status yourself. Just send SMS-POST TRACK<13 digit article identification number> to 166 or 51969 to get the latest status.
Internet based Track and Trace System
An on-line track and trace service offered by Speed Post allows you to use the thirteen-digit barcode that identifies the specific Speed Post consignment. Web-based technology tracks your Speed Post consignment from booking to delivery.
Quick Tools and Track Consignment
The Quick Tools page on the India Post website gives you detailed information on tracking Speed Post, Registered Letters, Registered Packets and other India Post articles. The actual tracking is done through the ‘Track Consignment’ page that is accessed through the link
You just need to enter the consignment number/ article barcode in the relevant box, enter the characters displayed in the image box and click on search. The status of the Speed Post article will be displayed before you.
The Tracking System of India Post gets updated at quick intervals of time. So, the recent status of the item is available. When the article is booked at your post office, the status shown is that of ‘Item Booked’. ‘Item Received’ indicates that the article was received at the post office. ‘Item Bagged’ shows that your article is in the dispatch bag. ‘Item Dispatched’ indicates when your article was dispatched. ‘Out for Delivery’ status indicates that your article is out for delivery, while ‘Item Delivered’ indicates that the delivery has been completed successfully.
Using a mobile app to track your Speed Post article
The India Post website www.indiapost.gov.in gives you access to a mobile app called Postinfo that you can download for Android and Windows devices. Speed Post and some other India Post services can be tracked through the mobile apps. The Article Number is used for the purpose of tracking.
You can also download free the mobile app that’s appropriate for your device. To know more, please visit the website of Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT).
When no tracking information is available
In some cases you may notice that the tracking information is not available. This happens because of a lag in scanning and updating the information status of your article. You are probably seeing it too soon after booking the article by Speed Post. This could happen in remote rural post offices or in case of an international postal administration.
India Post handles a volume of nearly 40000000 articles across its extensive network each month. The status information is stored for 90 days. So, tracking an article can be done by you for three months only. After three months the information is deleted.
